Nostalgic Flashback Of The 1950s Era

Having grown up in the 1950s, it’s fun for me to think about some

of the clever things of that time.

Drive in theaters

Drive In Theaters, known back then as “passion pits,” are bringing it back

many happy memories!

My birthday in July was peak season for the Drive In

movies. I would invite all my friends to celebrate

birthday complete with my mom’s homemade grilled sandwiches, my favorite. She made it from sliced back roast and then placed the meat in an electric skillet smothered in barbeque sauce. Just before dark, we all piled into the car and set off for the arrival. I still remember the intermission jingle “Let’s all go to the lobby” with the hot dog, soda and popcorn dancing across the screen.

The Drive In was a popular place to go on dates and after

show we went to Steak n Shake for a hamburger and

French fries.

At that time you stayed in the car and the food was brought to you

you. A tray holder was placed on the driver’s side window to hold food. I just learned from my teenage grandchildren that “going steady” is no longer used.

I asked them, what do you call it now? They only replied, “I’m going

It doesn’t make sense to me, but that’s how times change. Once upon a time in the 1950s and 1960s, when you “stood still,” a girl was given her boyfriend’s ring to wear. Since they were always too big to fit, we would wrap the back with white bandage tape and then cover it with fluffy angora yarn in different colors.. too cool!

The only place you could buy angora in my town was a

department store downtown and I still remember that I did

they don’t have cashiers at the counters, but instead a clerk

send your money through a vacuum tube that led up to

cash office. It was similar to a drive-in

banking tube that is used today.

Rock n Roll

Summer of 1955 with Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock”

changed the music we listened to forever. I was addicted.

Then came Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and

the rest is history. I used to go downtown every Saturday

Lindstrom’s Record store and listen to the latest hits and always

come home with at least one new 45. In my bedroom next to my bed

was my radio that I listened to every night just to hear it

latest songs. Radio was only AM and at night in those days

less interference on the air from which I could pick up the station

Little Rock, which was about 600 miles from where I lived. The

an ad I’ll never forget was for White Rose

Vaseline. I was so excited that night when I heard the song “Sea

Cruise” that I ran down to Lindstrom to buy just to find out

that it was not yet available.

My parents didn’t like Rock n Roll and I would say it sounds like

noise. But they “put up with” it and allowed me to play

my record player was as loud as it would go, which wasn’t too loud

compared to today’s stereos. Now we have stereo v

living room, portable stereo in garage with

subwoofer, subwoofers on our computers and subwoofer in

car. My love for music stayed with me and music and more

the equipment to play with keeps getting better.

Clothes

Bobbie cuffed socks worn with suede “deer” boots or saddle

shoes that came in all color combinations and styles from light

weight to the original heavier oxford in black and white.

Girls’ sleeves were always short and rolled into a cuff

shirts with sleeves and finished with a scarf around the neck.

Mid-calf woolen skirts with a slit

in the back. Popular hairstyles were ponytails and

shoulder-length hair that was curled at the ends with bangs and

usually the side part. Barrettes were often used as decoration and

keep your hair away from your face. Typical clothes for boys

there were blue jeans with cuffs, a t-shirt with the sleeves rolled up,

or shirts with the collar turned up at the back. They wore

various hairstyles with short hair, from ass to moderate

a longer Elvis style that was swept back and held in place

VO5 Ducktail Hair Dressing or DA as it was called.

Going to church on Easter Sunday was a sight! All

women and young girls (myself included) wore a decorated hat

artificial flowers along with white gloves.

Toys and hobbies

As a child, I wasn’t much into dolls because I preferred to be one

to explore or do something with your hands outside. One doll

which I enjoyed for a short time was the Ginny doll

hidden in the closet with all the clothes,

accessories and furniture along with Toni doll still in

original box almost undamaged. The Toni doll was a Christmas present

and obviously I was at an age where I just didn’t care

lots of.

The Easy Bake Oven has been around for over 50 years as I was given

one for Christmas when I was 8 and I made and ate everything

cakes the first night. Needless to say I got very sick afterwards

That night!

One of my weekly stops downtown was the local Hobby Shop

sold Paint by Number products. I would sit at the table in

solarium and paint for hours. I painted this trash can black

and a Kleenex box holder my mother got as a gift.

They also sold magic tricks that caught my eye and I would give it a go

magic show at home on a piano bench covered in black

antique crazy quilt. Two other toys that I have fond memories of were the Hula Hoop and the Slinky.

Burmese shaving

The old motels are now a thing of the past and have been replaced

with travel hotels. More rooms in less space, but not like that

convenient like motels where you would park right in front

your room.

We saw Burma Shave when our family took road trips

signs along the road and read them as we passed them.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS THE SLOPE UNLESS YOU HAVE A PERISCOPE, BURMA SHAVING.

If computers had appeared 45 years earlier, I think my life would have been completely different. Well, better late than never.
