Bed Bug Inspection: How to Prepare the Room for Bed Bug Inspection

If you have bed bugs in your home, an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach is the best way to deal with the problem. Bed bugs are difficult pests to control. However, there are things you can do to deal with the problem before applying treatment.

Once the bed bugs in your home have been identified and confirmed, there are some pre-treatment steps you need to take. Room preparation for bed bug control is essential for successful bed bug eradication.

A thorough inspection before any cleaning will allow you to determine the extent of the problem. Prevents disturbance and spread of bed bugs before application of treatment.

Bed bug control checklist

A. Remove curtains and drapes from the window and place them in plastic bags and seal the bags tightly.

b. Remove all bedding, pillows and covers from the bed and place them in plastic bags. Close the bags tightly before transporting them to the laundry.

C. Empty drawers, closets, nightstands, cabinets, and tables and place items in plastic bags. Seal the bags tightly.

d. Put clothes, coats and shoes in plastic bags. Close the bags tightly before taking them to the laundry.

E. Place any loose clothing (such as clothing found outside the dresser) in plastic bags and wash according to the washing instructions below.

F. Remove all items from under the bed and on the floor and place them in plastic bags and seal the bags tightly.

G. Place all items that cannot be washed (eg plastic toys, books, electronics) in plastic bags for inspection and seal the bags tightly.

h. Remove all fabric and plush items except plush furniture and place them in plastic bags and seal the bags tightly.

i. If possible, remove and wash plush furniture cushions.

j. Move all furniture at least 18 inches away from the wall.

k. Remove outlet covers, wall switch covers, telephone jack covers, and switch covers.

l. Remove all wall hangings (eg picture frames, mirrors) and clean and treat items.

m If possible, remove the TV from the wall unit. Keep all electrical equipment in treatment areas.

n. If heating or air conditioning units are near the bed, remove the front panel for inspection.

O. Loosen the carpets at the wall/floor junction. Do not remove the carpet from the room.

p. Remove all items attached to the wall and place them in a plastic bag for inspection.

Q. Remove electrical outlet covers and switches.

r. Place books, magazines, notepads and binders, etc. in the bag for inspection.

s. Remove everything from the floor for a thorough inspection.

t. Pets and people must leave the area during the treatment and wait outside the area for at least 4 hours after the treatment.

u If you have an aquarium at home, cover it with a towel or plastic, as it is extremely sensitive to pesticides.

v. Clean and isolate all linens and other items until the bed bug problem is resolved.

w. Make sure you have access to the bed, wardrobe, all furniture and baseboard to inspect and treat.

X. Where possible, pry the base plate away from the wall.

y Dispose of all plastic bags used to transport infested items in an outdoor trash can.

Laundry instructions

Wash all washable items (eg bedding, pillowcases, plush pillows, etc.) in hot water (>60°C or 140°F) [thermal death point rate]) and then place the washed laundry in the dryer and set the temperature to the heat death point for a minimum of 30 minutes.

After drying, place the items in plastic bags and seal the bags tightly. Keep all washed items out of the infested room until the pest problem is resolved.
