Cutting Your Own Wooden Pen Blanks

Making wooden pens is not only a fun hobby, but it can also put a few extra dollars in your pocket.

Today, many people appreciate a quality writing instrument and what better way to show style than with an elegant pen or environmentally friendly pencil.

When customers consider a wooden pen, they look for several things.

Don’t forget to sell the pen; you need to grab the customer’s attention. One of the best ways to do this is with an interesting species, color, texture or finish. Without these critical factors, the customer is unlikely to even notice the pen; the less pick it up for a closer look.

After the customer picks up the pen, the focus is on craftsmanship. Is the cut excellent? Perfect ending? Is the pen easy to use? Does it fit your hand? During this time, the customer usually examines the wood carefully, looking for something that stands out.

How can you make sure you have enough blanks and be sure your pens have what it takes to get the customer to take a closer look? One way is to carve them yourself from almost any kind of wood you have in your area.

While exotic blanks have their place and make nice looking items, local wood can certainly be very attractive. Plus, you can’t beat the price, especially if you cut them yourself.

The necessary tools are few. In fact, only one power tool is necessary, and that is the table saw. While a chainsaw is very useful and will make your job easier, a hand saw will do just fine if you give it the power.

When looking for blanks, I usually focus on small branches or trees that are 5-7 inches in diameter. Then I saw these pieces at 8 inch lengths. This size can be cut fairly easily with a 10′ table saw.

Immediately after trimming the limb to size, take latex house paint and paint two thick coats on the exposed ends of the wood. This will prevent cracking and destruction for use as pen blanks.

The wood must be dry before cutting. This usually takes about 10 months for a piece of wood of this size. Of course, it is best to protect the wood from the elements during this drying process.

o IMPORTANT: You can seriously injure yourself and/or injure your limbs while cutting on a table saw. These limbs are prone to sticking and wedging your blade, causing wood to fly out of the saw if you’re not careful. This can cause your hand to slip into the blade. You are responsible for your own safety when using this or any other power tool.

When the wood is dry, I cut it to about 7/8 inch wide and then cut blanks 7/8 inch square. This makes it a handy blank size for most pens you can make.

Also, while you’re at it, cut out 2″ x 3″ blanks for the bottle caps. Consider making a pen, pencil, letter opener and bottle stopper from the same type of wood.

Here’s a helpful tip: When you’re done cutting, mark each individual blank with the type of wood. Use something permanent like a Sharpie pen. You may be able to recognize the wood today, but I guarantee you that it will be difficult to identify in a year when it is mixed with other offcuts of a similar wood species. If you’re not careful, you’ll end up with what wood turners call “FIG” wood. OBR means “found in the garage”

This is a good time to consider stocking your blanks. Options include plastic bags that fit in a shelf like a plastic shoe box or something larger if needed. Plan ahead, you’ll find you may have more empty pens than you have room for!

So keep looking for wood to turn into a pen/pencil/stopper, have fun and maybe put a few extra bucks into your hobby.
