Rajasthan Art & Craft

It is known worldwide for its hand-printed textiles, furniture, leather work, jewellery, paintings, ceramics and metalwork. An ethnic aura surrounds even the simplest forms, making everyone a collector’s delight.

Fabrics from Rajasthan

Rajasthani fabrics are decorated with beautiful vibrant colors. They use fabrics like cotton, silk and wool to produce attractive patterns and textures.

Tie and dye:

• This art is called ‘Bandhej’. In this case, the garments are dyed together with undyed points, giving a distinctive look. This is a highly skilled art.

• DE-starched cotton cloth (can be soaked in water overnight) is used for the “Bandhej”. Next, the design and motif patterns like flower, leaves, etc. are prepared. Now the motif is tied using threads as per your pattern.

• The beauty of this technique is that each way of tying gives you a new design every time.

• The complete canvas along with the tied motifs is now dyed. After the fabric is dyed, washed and dried, all the knots are untied and the fabric is finished with extravagant designs.

Block painting:

Rajasthan is the heart of block printing. Most of the work is done by hand only. The art of block printing and dyeing is associated with home furnishings and fabric for personal wear. The main centers for block printing are Sanganer and Bagru.

Jewelery from Rajasthan

Rajasthan is especially famous for its silver ornaments. Each part of Rajasthan is known for its own distinct style of silver jewellery. Known for their high quality enamel work, Jaipur artisans use enamel colors such as red, blue, white, black, green, yellow and gold, which are derived from minerals.

The creatively crafted jewelery uses a combination of enameling and Kundan work unique to Rajasthan. Kundan is the art of setting stones into jewellery.

Lacquer & Glass:

• Lac is mainly used for bracelets and decorative items. Lacquer bracelets are produced in bright colors. These bracelets and decorative items are inlaid with glass and colored stone.

• The process of making lacquer bracelets involves much less technology and requires much less space. Varnish production is a fairly tedious process that requires many steps to make shellacs.

• Lacquer shellac is melted in a container and when it is in a semi-melted state, the mixture is stirred and attached to the end of a wooden stick.

• Then the varnish attached to the wood is slowly heated, when the varnish starts to heat up and soften, it is pressed against the metal plate (Silla), simultaneously at intervals with a flat wooden tool locally known as HATTA.

• When the varnish is warm and soft, the color varnish of the desired color is heated and melted, and then spread evenly along the varnish to achieve the color. After the paint is applied, the craftsman rolls out the lacquer to the desired length and thickness.

• The lacquer is transferred to the shape of the bracelets and then the craftsman inserts the finished bracelet into a wooden mandrel to give it the correct size and shape.

• Rajasthan is rich in jewellery, each region has its own unique style. Some of the traditional designs are rakhri, tirnaniyan, bala, bajuband, gajra, gokhru, jod etc.

Furniture and carving

Rajasthan excels in the art of making ‘antique furniture’. Doors and windows, wooden jharokhas, tables with cast iron jaalis, sideboards, chairs, benches, jule or swings and chests of drawers are made to resemble the furniture that was in vogue in Havelis a century ago.

Marble tabletops are also popular, and screens are available with both painted panels and brass trim. The range of Rajasthani furniture paintings is one of the special features of Rajasthani furniture.

These paintings are flexible and have a very distinctive style as these paintings are examples of rich craftsmanship. The color scheme is predominantly traditional and foregrounds the influence of a rich cultural heritage.

Puppets:

Cheap souvenirs that recall more easily than most things when it comes to memories of the state of chivalrous kings and beautiful queens. Painted wooden heads, hands made simply by stuffing rags or cotton into the sleeve of the dress, with a painted expression, arched eyebrows, a mustache for men and a nose ring, and large expressive eyes on the face, the puppets are covered in dresses made of sequins of old fabric.

Leather clothes

The skins of dead animals have never been put to better use than in Rajasthan, whether as Mojari jutis (embroidered footwear) or as saddles, bags and sacks. Jaipur and Jodhpur are traditional centers for jutis.

With a treasure trove of history, picturesque architecture, spectacular art and culture and enchanting landscapes, Rajasthan is a destination like no other.
