The Best Way to Clean Hardwood Floors

Your hardwood floor is installed. Smiling, you take in the incomparable charm and warmth that only hardwood flooring can bring to your home. Hardwood flooring provides a sense of expansiveness while also radiating a feeling of warmth. But now what? How do you keep your wood floors looking their best?

Luckily, wood floors are durable and will keep in good condition with the right type of cleaning. The key to proper cleaning is a three step process:

Step 1: Keep Dirt Off Wood Floors
Abrasive dirt, sand and gravel are one of your wood floor’s worst enemies. They not only dull the floor’s finish, but they can also scratch and leave permanent damage to the surface. One of the most important steps to cleaning a hardwood floor is to remove any dirt, sand, debris or other particles regularly or even daily. Remove dirt particles by sweeping with a soft-haired broom or by using a vacuum cleaner with the beater bar turned off.

Step 2: Proper Cleaning Solution
At least every two weeks damp mop your hardwood flooring. Before mopping remove all surface hair, dust, and dirt. Next, fill a clean bucket with a solution of PH neutral wood floor cleaner and water. Immerse a clean mop into the solution and wring it until it is damp-dry. Never use a soaking wet mop on the floor. Large amounts of water can damage a hardwood floor. Pools of water can cause warping, spotting or fading. Only use a damp mop and rinse mop often.

    Ph Neutral Cleaners
High PH cleaners are great at getting rid of dirt and grime, but unfortunately they can damage the finish of your hardwood floor over time. PH neutral cleaners work by dissolving deposits without harming the finish. In addition, PH neutral cleaners require no rinsing.

Check with your flooring retailer expert and follow their advice on which professional cleaning products to use to remove stains and spills without dulling the finish of your wood floor. If product manufacturer is unknown, use a hardwood floor cleaner that is water based and PH neutral.

Step 3: Daily Spills
Keep spills wiped up. If spills happen, wipe up immediately to prevent the liquid from seeping into the wood and drying. This could cause permanent and unsightly damage to the floor. Remove any spills promptly using a clean, dry cloth then clean the residue from the spill using an appropriate floor cleaner.

Do’s and Don’ts for Cleaning Wood Floors

Do Not:
Don’t wax a urethane finish-ever.
Don’t use a wax or wax based product over surface finishes.
Don’t use cleaners that leave a film or residue
Don’t use ammonia.
Don’t wet mop or use excessive water to clean your floor.
Don’t drag furniture when moving it. Instead lift furniture to prevent scratches.

Do:
Do minimize water exposure and clean spills immediately. Pick up spills and sticky spots with a damp cloth and recommended cleaning product. Standing water can warp wood and damage the finish.
Do clean up dirt, grit and sand immediately to prevent scratches and dulling.
Do place furniture protector pads on the legs of tables and chairs on the wood floor to protect against dents and scratches.
Do trim your pet’s nails to prevent scratches.
Do remove heavy shoes and high heels whenever possible to prevent permanent dents or scuff marks.
Do place mats and area rugs in high traffic areas or entryways to help prevent dirt from being tracked inside. Make sure mats, runners or rugs stay dry and are cleaned underneath often.
Do use mats or rugs next to sinks whenever possible to prevent water damage.

Keeping hardwood flooring looking beautiful requires regular maintenance. But with routine care and following the tips above you will keep your hardwood floors looking like new for years to come.
